ACTVE blogs

During lockdown in the summer of 2020, I took on some freelance blogging work for ACTVE, a start-up online fitness platform, and wrote content surrounding fitness and nutrition.

Top Foods to Eat for Building Muscle on a Vegan Diet

When you ask a seasoned vegan “But how do you get your protein in?” your most common response will be an eye roll to the back of the head. Or, if they don’t show this outwardly, you can guarantee it’ll be happening internally, as they’re all too familiar with this question, and having to explain that there are, in fact, plenty of plant-based foods which naturally contain enough protein, without needing a slab of meat to accompany them. If you’re a newbie to working out on the reg’, however, and

A Beginners Guide to Working Out at Home

Now we’ve established just some of the pros of starting a new home-workout regime, it’s time to think about your goals. Ask yourself: – Am I working out to increase my overall health and fitness level? – To benefit my mental health? – To lose weight? – To tone? – To build muscle? You may be doing it for one or more of the above reasons, but a key point to remember is that a workout will always benefit your mental health (unless you incur an unfortunate injury, of course!). So, whatever moo

The Best Ways to Livestream Concerts from Home during Quarantine

Thought Summer 2020 was going to be #lit, and now all of your festivals, concerts and events of any shape or form have been cancelled? Yep, thanks for that COVID-19. But, hey, it’s not all bad: forget people singing badly over your fave jams, forget queues to the bar, and forget being pushed by eager beavers determined to elbow their way to the front of the stage. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, artists across the board have used their creative abilities and taken their performances online in

Top 10 Instagram Accounts to Follow for Healthy Recipe Inspo

We know that for the majority of us, this weekend is about eating our own body weight in Easter-egg chocolate, but whilst it’s important to treat yo’self during these tricky times, it’s also very important to be kind to your body and therefore kind to your mind. In fact, recent studies suggest that up to 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut*. This means that what we’re consuming has a direct impact on our mental health, and if we can eat well, this will lead to us feeling happier a

Ways to Hang Out with Friends & Family Virtually During Quarantine

Even for the most introverted, I think we can all agree that having this much personal space does not feel natural, and many of us are starting to really feel that 2-metre-plus gap between our friends, family and even partners. But, all is not lost. Thankfully, because we’re living in an ever-advancing digital world, we have plethora of alternative ways we can fill that gap, whilst staying safe in this current climate. Here’s a list of fun (and free) ways you can hang out with your besties virt

Charity Week 2020: Only Went and Doubled Last Year’s Donations!

For the last 4 years we’ve dedicated the first week in March to raising money and awareness for our charity partners YoungMinds and Jigsaw, who do incredible work to support the mental health of young people. From escape rooms and football matches to breakfast in bed, our staff and students put a shift in to get those funds raised and bust outdated taboos around mental health. This year, as we predicted, was our best year yet, raising over £ 4,000, which is more than double last year’s total! A

What to do with your second-hand stuff when living at Fresh

Every year, thousands of students move in and out of our uni accommodations and have lots of leftover possessions that they no longer have use for, or can’t take home with them. This is especially the case for many of our international students who aren’t moving back home for summer via car, but by train or plane! Second hand items can include clothing, extra suitcases, furniture, and tinned food. So, what to do with all of this leftover stuff that’s still in pretty good nick?

The Top 10 Things to do in Sheffield as a Student

Moving to Sheffield for uni, and looking for ways to entertain yourself in the city? Well, good news, because there are plenty. Probably known to your ‘rents as the ‘Steel City’, Sheffield is famous for its steel production back in the 19th century. But long since then, the city has grown to become known for having one of the most buzzing student nightlives in the UK, great food markets, shopping experiences and music festivals featuring the latest acts.

Throughout my time working for an IVF clinic which advocated safer fertility treatments for women, I wrote a number of blogs about the latest scientific findings in fertility, and was lucky enough to interview and write up stories of those who went on to have babies.

How to support your mental well-being during IVF

Coping with infertility and going through IVF treatment can take a strain on your emotional well-being. So, it’s important that you find ways to look after yourself and feel that you have the right support system around you. Women and men can feel a lot of conflicting emotions during IVF treatment that can raise anxiety levels, and cause inner turmoil. It is important to understand, however, that there are ways to deal with these emotions before they overwhelm you. It’s all about finding the ri

I felt like I was in really good hands.

My husband and I started trying for a baby after we got engaged for around a year, but as we were due to get married in summer in a different country, we decided to have a break because I was worried about being heavily pregnant whilst I was away. After we got married, we decided to start trying again pretty much immediately and we did get pregnant later that year. Sadly, however, in the February we suffered a miscarriage. We were heartbroken, and our issues began to take a strain on our relati

Key Fertility Terms Explained

In the field of fertility, we understand that there are a lot of terms, acronyms and abbreviations to keep track of and understand. So, we’ve created our own fertility glossary so that you’re in the know from the get-go when it comes to your fertility journey: AMH: stands for Anti-Mullerian Hormone. This is a protein hormone produced by cells within the ovary. Understanding your AMH level tells you how good your egg reserve is and this gives the doctor an indication of how fertile you are. AMH

Growing human eggs in a lab brings hope to cancer patients

A recent scientific study has shown that human eggs can be grown from a very early stage of development to their fully matured stage in a laboratory. This technique could be used to preserve the fertility of young girls diagnosed with cancer prior to undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which can leave patients infertile. The technique involves taking a tissue sample from the ovaries and freezing it prior to the young girl’s cancer treatment.

Remember, you only need one egg!

I was approaching my late 30s and I wasn’t in a relationship when I contacted a fertility clinic to have my eggs frozen. Unfortunately, I was to learn that my fertility was in fact very low, too low for that kind of treatment. The doctors advised me to not waste any time if I wanted a child and that I should really think about “trying” straight away. It was a scary position to find myself in - all of a sudden, I was in a situation where I had to make a life changing decision; have a baby by myself now, or I may never have children

I can’t thank CREATE Fertility enough!

We had been trying to get pregnant for 5 years in total before we heard about CREATE Fertility. During that period, we had two natural pregnancies, but sadly the first ended in an ectopic pregnancy and the second ended in a 2nd trimester miscarriage. After that, we struggled to fall pregnant again. We were heartbroken, and we went for some tests with the NHS to find out more about why it wasn’t happening for us. Unfortunately, the test results that came back didn’t bring us any closer to underst

Gene editing of human embryos

A recent scientific study has successfully demonstrated the ability to alter defective DNA in human embryos, with the objective of removing genetic mutations. This breakthrough development presents the opportunity to facilitate new research into the prevention of many genetic disorders. Our Medical Director Professor Geeta Nargund says that this is a major advance in gene editing but there are many scientific, regulatory and ethical hurdles that will still need to be overcome. Professor Nargund

I think my journey would have been very different if I’d found CREATE sooner!

My husband and I had been trying to have a baby for around 18 months before we decided to go to the GP to find out why we weren’t able to get pregnant. This was the start of a long road of confusion and ambiguous answers from different GPs and consultants who didn’t seem to communicate with each other. After 3 years of being bumped from doctor to doctor, I had an external scan and I was told that I needed a laparoscopy to find out more about what was going on internally. Finally, they came back

CREATE pioneers using tamoxifen tablets

This year Professor Geeta Nargund and her team at CREATE Fertility presented an analysis of a study with the use of tamoxifen tablets in IVF treatment on 31 women with the average age of 40, and a low egg reserve (AMH lower than 4 pmol/l). Tamoxifen is a tablet traditionally used to prevent the regrowth of tumours after patients have undergone breast cancer surgery. It has also previously been used in ovulation induction in women who do not ovulate naturally.
